Cotton Hail Damage Insurance Claim Assessment

The Challenge:

AgClaims was appointed to assess severe hail damage to cotton early in the growing season. The event affected multiple fields insured under the policy, with initial inspections identifying highly variable impacts across the property - ranging from total destruction (100% loss) in some fields to partial damage of between 13.82% and 45.43% in others.

Our Approach:

Drawing on specialist knowledge of cotton growth stages, event timing, and cost-benefit recovery modelling, we worked closely with the insured and insurer to identify the most financially effective strategy. This included confirming fields suitable for replanting, and identifying fields best treated as a Constructive Total Loss (CTL) be terminated early to avoid further unnecessary expenditure.

Throughout the season, our assessor maintained close communication with the insured and their agronomist to ensure any required additional inputs (for example, fertiliser and irrigation) were assessed and approved promptly under the policy.

The Outcome:

Timely interventions supported strong crop recovery and reduced final losses on retained fields to between 7.42% and 24.77%.

Proactive claims management and collaborative decision-making resulted in an insured satisfied with the yields achieved, and an insurer pleased with the outcome.

Bottom Line:

Overall, losses on retained fields were reduced by approximately 39.13% from initial projections, contributing to a $400,000 reduction in the final quantum from the original reserve.
